Ebrard announces $1.3 billion Pilgrim's Pride investment in Mexico

During her morning press conference at the National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a significant investment. Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard reported that Pilgrim's Pride will invest 1.3 billion dollars in Mexico during the current six-year term. The objective of this project is to boost national chicken production and reduce import dependency. Ebrard highlighted that this will allow Mexico to stop importing 35% of the chicken it currently purchases from abroad by producing that volume domestically, in addition to generating jobs in various states. Jesus Muñoz and Fabio Sandri, President and CEO of Pilgrim's, respectively, stated that the company has generated 50,000 indirect and 4,000 direct jobs in the country, with an annual production of 373,000 tons. Ebrard also stated this Thursday that the countries that are part of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) are already in practice 'in the review' of the agreement and affirmed that the process must be completed by next July 1. The official's statements come after Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the USMCA is 'irrelevant' for his country amid the open trade war waged by the U.S. president with the imposition of tariffs on imports. 'I would say that we are already in the review of the treaty, we have to finish on July 1, that is our time,' Ebrard said. On electoral reform, President Sheinbaum affirmed that there is no formal proposal yet and that the issue is still in process. The head of state pointed out that one of the central points is to reduce the cost of elections, considering that they should not be so expensive, with the aim of fostering greater citizen participation and strengthening democracy in the country. Sheinbaum rejected that the reform seeks to strip autonomy from electoral institutions and maintained that the proposal focuses on reducing electoral expenses, as well as public financing to political parties. 'What interests us is a reduction in general expenses, because elections in Mexico are the most expensive in the world.' Will Pope Leo XIV come to Mexico this year? The president confirmed during her press conference that there is a possibility that Pope Leo XIV will visit Mexico this year, although she clarified that there is no official communication from the Vatican.
